Description
Bodhidharma & Welcoming Pine
Wisdom · Strength · Resilience · Heritage
This Eastern-inspired wood and stone sculpture brings together Bodhidharma, a welcoming pine and natural stone in one contemplative composition.
Bodhidharma stands beside the stone with a calm and resolute expression. His brows, beard, robes and posture are rendered through three-dimensional carving, while the broad sleeves extend with the natural movement of the form.
A large area of raw natural stone remains visible at the center. Its rugged, unregularized surface contrasts with the warm, polished wood around it: one side preserves the marks of nature, while the other reflects the form given by the craftsperson.
Above the composition, the ancient pine follows the natural direction of the wood. Its trunk flows with the grain and its branches extend outward, creating a vertical structure shared by the figure, stone and tree.
The sculpture does not attempt to conceal the wood’s grain, openings or natural form. These characteristics are integrated into the overall design.
Wood gives form. Stone gives strength. Pine gives atmosphere. Bodhidharma gives spirit.
Symbolism
Bodhidharma · Wisdom and Awakening: Bodhidharma is a distinctive subject in Eastern Zen-inspired art and may express wisdom, determination, reflection and spiritual practice. His steady expression and flowing robes create visual tension between stillness and movement.
Welcoming Pine · Resilience and Longevity: The evergreen pine grows upward among stone and is traditionally associated with resilience, longevity, vitality and permanence.
Natural Stone · Stability and Time: The irregular outline, natural cracks and rugged surface are left visible, creating the relationship of stone’s strength, wood’s life and the figure’s insight.
Overall meaning: A steady heart like stone · A path that rises like pine.
